Dots vs Muse vs Instinct: The 2026 AI Agent Race Explained

Quick answer: As of September 29, 2026, three always-on AI agents lead the race. Instinct is an independent startup's texting agent (not Google's), in invite-only beta since Aug 26 and free for now. Meta Muse launched Sept 8 in the US (Canada followed Sept 18), and costs nothing (card on file), $20 or $100 a month; it also works in WhatsApp. OpenAI dots launched Sept 29 on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and 4,000+ app connections, starting at $100/month on ChatGPT Pro, but not on Pro in the EEA, Switzerland or UK. Dots is the most capable, Muse the cheapest to try in the US, Instinct the one to watch. For everyday reminders and follow-ups in the chat you already use, a WhatsApp assistant like Agent Sonic is the lighter fit.

What are Dots, Muse and Instinct, and why did they all launch in the same month?

They are three takes on the same idea: an AI that doesn't just answer questions but keeps working for you in the background. Instinct opened an invite-only beta on August 26, Meta launched Muse on September 8, and OpenAI launched dots at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Throw in Instinct's funding news the day before DevDay and you get a month where every feed had a new agent in it.

Instinct is a personal texting agent built by Spear Street Technology, an independent startup. Some outlets called it a Google product. It isn't. It's invite-only, free today with no published price, and on September 28 it raised a $1 billion Series C at a $10 billion valuation.

Meta Muse is Meta's consumer agent. It launched for adults in the US on September 8 and reached Canada on September 18, on iOS, Android, the web at muse.ai and inside WhatsApp, and passed 3 million reported downloads. It runs its own virtual machine and browser in the background and is built to buy things for you, which is why even the free plan wants a payment card on file.

OpenAI dots (OpenAI writes it lowercase) is an always-on agent built into ChatGPT and powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, connects to more than 4,000 apps, and keeps working after you close the chat. The press framed it as OpenAI's answer to Muse and similar agents such as SpaceXAI's Grok Bot and Instinct. Sam Altman's verdict on Muse: it "seems like a nice product."

What does an "always-on AI agent" actually mean?

An always-on agent is an AI that keeps working after you stop typing. It runs on a computer in the cloud, takes actions in websites and apps on your behalf, and pauses to ask your approval before anything consequential. A chatbot answers. An agent does.

Dots is the clearest example. Each dot has its own cloud computer and browser, works toward your goals 24/7 and, with your permission, can also use your own laptop. It can sign into supported websites with saved passwords the model never sees. OpenAI's own example: an early tester's dot noticed he had forgotten to invoice a publication, pulled the details from the email thread, drafted the invoice, and sent it once he approved.

Muse follows the same pattern: a virtual machine and browser running in the background, with approval requests for sensitive actions like purchases and emails. Instinct positions itself as a personal agent you text; public detail on how it works under the hood is thin while it's invite-only.

The approval layer is where these products earn or lose your trust. Dots gives you Custom Rules (allow an action, require approval, or block it outright), an auto-review system for consequential actions, and an Activity View where you can watch, pause or reset your dot. Sensitive tasks such as changing passwords always stay with you. OpenAI also admits dots can make mistakes, which is exactly why those controls exist.

Dots vs Muse vs Instinct: how do they compare side by side?

Short version: dots is the most capable and the most expensive, Muse is the easiest to try if you live in the US, and Instinct is the most promising unknown. The table below sticks to what's confirmed as of September 29, 2026. Where a company hasn't said, the table says so.

Two things jump out. First, none of them works everywhere: Muse is limited to the US and Canada, Instinct needs an invite, and dots on ChatGPT Pro skips the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK. Second, each one lives somewhere new (a new app, a ChatGPT tab, a work chat) rather than in the place most people already talk to their clients, family and team.

If you're weighing just two of them, our deeper head-to-heads cover Meta Muse vs Instinct and OpenAI dots vs Meta Muse in more detail.

What is each agent genuinely good at, and what's the catch?

Dots is the heavyweight. It learns your preferences, standards and working habits from feedback, remembers context no matter which channel you message it from, and can run proactive research that scans your connected apps with read-only access. Inside OpenAI, dots start investigating when a bug is posted in Slack, and they've turned designs into working apps. You can even tag a dot into a shared ChatGPT Space page to help your team.

The catch is the entry ticket. Dots need ChatGPT Pro ($100 a month at minimum) or a Business Premium seat, and aren't on Free, Go or Plus. You must be 18 or older, and you have to create your dot on a desktop. OpenAI also says more dots, extra speed and bigger workloads will cost extra later, at prices it hasn't disclosed.

Muse is the easiest on-ramp in the US. There's a free tier (about 100 million tokens a week), plus Power at $20 a month (about 500 million tokens) and Maximum at $100 a month (about 3 billion tokens). The tiers differ in capacity, not features. It's also the only one of the three you can talk to inside WhatsApp, though the WhatsApp version lacks app features like the feed and the ideas tool.

Muse's catches: it's only in the US and Canada, it wants a card on file before you start, and token budgets are hard for normal people to reason about. And the shopping agent has a notable hole: Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.

Instinct is the dark horse. A $10 billion valuation before a public launch says investors think texting-first agents are a big deal. But with an invite-only beta and no published pricing, there isn't much a regular person can act on yet.

What do all three agents get wrong for normal people?

They're built for people who want to hand an AI a computer. Most people want something smaller: remember this, remind me, chase that person, read this PDF. For that job, all three make you pay, qualify or relocate before you get any help.

Price and token confusion. On launch day, early reports from TechCrunch and BGR said dots were only on the $200 Pro tier; an OpenAI staffer then clarified that every Pro plan, including the $100 one, gets a dot. If the press needed a correction, regular buyers will too. Muse bills in tokens. Quick: how many tokens is "book me a haircut"? Nobody knows, and that's the problem.

Region locks. Muse is only in the US and Canada. Dots on Pro isn't available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, with no timeline. Instinct is invite-only. If you run a business in London, a household in Dubai and a team spread across Lahore and Tel Aviv, the "best AI agent of 2026" may simply not be open to you.

Desktop setup. You can't create a dot on your phone. You need the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT on a desktop browser, and only then can you use it on mobile. For someone who runs their business from a phone, that's a real speed bump.

They live in new places. Dots live in ChatGPT, Slack, Teams and a US-only SMS beta. WhatsApp isn't a launch channel, and OpenAI gave no date for other messaging apps. Muse does reach WhatsApp, but only where Muse is available: the US and, since September 18, Canada. Meanwhile most people's actual lives, from the family group to clients, suppliers, the landlord and the kids' coach, run in WhatsApp.

Is there a simpler fourth option that lives in WhatsApp?

Yes. Agent Sonic isn't trying to be a cloud computer. It's a personal AI assistant that lives entirely inside WhatsApp: no app to install, no dashboard, no desktop setup. You message it like you'd message a sharp friend who happens to never forget anything.

It covers the everyday half of what people hoped agents would do: one-time and recurring reminders, to-dos and notes, and a personal memory that sticks. It can message people on your behalf and report their answers back, run automatic reminders inside WhatsApp groups, read PDFs, contracts, invoices and spreadsheets you forward, browse and search the live web, create and edit images, and connect to Google Calendar, Sheets and Docs.

You can talk instead of type, since Sonic takes voice notes and can answer with voice. It works wherever WhatsApp works and writes naturally in your language, whether that's English, Hebrew or Arabic, including Arabizi. The table shows what that looks like in a normal week.

Honest limits, because they matter: Sonic doesn't make purchases, doesn't have 4,000 integrations, doesn't run a cloud computer for hours of autonomous coding or research, and isn't in Slack or Teams. If those are your needs, dots is the better tool. If your needs are "stop letting things slip," Sonic is built for exactly that.

Dots, Muse, Instinct or Sonic: which one should you pick?

Pick the tool that matches the job, not the headline. Here's the fast decision guide as of September 29, 2026.

Pick OpenAI dots if you do heavy knowledge work (research, coding, multi-step web tasks), your team lives in Slack or Teams, you're outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK (or on Business Premium), and $100 a month is an easy yes. On paper, it's the most capable of the three.

Pick Meta Muse if you're in the US, you want to try an agent for free or $20 a month, and you're comfortable keeping a card on file and budgeting in tokens. Just don't expect it to shop on Amazon.

Pick Instinct if you can get an invite and like the idea of an agent that works over text. It's free for now, so the only cost is your curiosity.

Pick Agent Sonic if your life and business run in WhatsApp and what you actually need is reminders, follow-ups, group nudges, document answers and calendar help, without a new app, a desktop setup or a region lock. These aren't either/or choices, either: plenty of people will want a heavyweight agent for deep work and a WhatsApp assistant for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Is Instinct made by Google?

No. Instinct is built by Spear Street Technology, an independent startup, even though some outlets described it as a Google product. It's a personal texting agent in invite-only beta since August 26, 2026, and it raised a $1 billion Series C at a $10 billion valuation on September 28, 2026.

Which is cheapest: dots, Muse or Instinct?

Instinct is free during its invite-only beta, with no published price. Muse has a free tier (payment card required), a $20 Power plan and a $100 Maximum plan, but only in the US and Canada. Dots start at $100 a month through ChatGPT Pro, where your first dot is included, or through a Business Premium seat.

Can I use dots, Muse or Instinct in the UK or Europe?

As of launch, dots on ChatGPT Pro exclude the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, with no timeline; Business Premium gets dots in all supported ChatGPT regions, including Europe and the UK. Muse is available in the US and Canada only. Instinct is invite-only and hasn't published regional availability.

Which AI agent works on WhatsApp?

Of the three, only Meta Muse is on WhatsApp, and only in the US and Canada; the WhatsApp version also lacks app features like the feed and ideas tool. Dots are not on WhatsApp at launch, and OpenAI gave no date for other messaging apps. Agent Sonic is an assistant that lives entirely in WhatsApp and works wherever WhatsApp does.

Do I need ChatGPT Pro to get an OpenAI dot?

Yes, or Business Premium. Dots are available to users 18 and older on every ChatGPT Pro tier and on Business Premium in eligible markets, while Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare get a beta that's off until an admin enables it. Dots are not on ChatGPT Free, Go or Plus.

Do these AI agents buy things on their own?

Muse is built to make purchases and asks your approval for sensitive actions, but Amazon blocked it from shopping on Amazon. Dots can act on websites and let you require approval or block actions entirely with Custom Rules, and sensitive tasks like changing passwords always stay with you. Agent Sonic doesn't make purchases at all.

What's the best AI agent for a small business owner in 2026?

It depends on where your work happens. If you do heavy research or coding and your team is in Slack or Teams, dots is the strongest option at $100 a month and up. If your clients, suppliers and team talk to you on WhatsApp and you mainly need reminders, follow-ups and document help, Agent Sonic fits better and needs no setup beyond sending a message.

Is OpenAI dots worth $100 a month?

For people who'll use an always-on agent with its own cloud computer, 4,000+ app connections and background research, it can be. For people who mostly need reminders, notes and chasing replies, it's a lot of machine for the job. OpenAI also says extra dots, speed and workload will cost more later, at prices it hasn't announced.
