OpenAI Dots Run on GPT-6 Astra: What That Means for You (and Still No WhatsApp) (2026)

Quick answer: OpenAI Dots run on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's flagship model released September 3, 2026 and now ChatGPT's default engine. Astra is what lets a Dot work for hours on its own cloud computer, use websites and apps like a person, and stay inside the task you gave it. Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and they live in ChatGPT, Slack and Teams. What Astra doesn't change: Dots still don't work in WhatsApp. If your reminders, follow-ups and group coordination happen there, Agent Sonic does that admin inside WhatsApp with nothing to install.

Your AI assistant is already in WhatsApp. Get Sonic today.

Reminders that actually fire. Follow-ups Sonic sends for you and reports back. PDFs, contracts and invoices summarized in seconds. Your Google Calendar handled by text, and group chats that run themselves. Voice notes welcome. Nothing to install, nothing to learn: message Sonic like any contact. Try “Remind me to call the accountant every Monday at 9.” Leave your details and you’ll get Sonic’s number right away.

Dots are Astra with a job and a computer

OpenAI's launch materials put it plainly: dots are always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each one gets its own cloud computer, learns from your feedback over time, and can keep working toward a goal around the clock, even after you close the tab.

That's the whole trick. The Dot is the job description and the always-on computer. Astra is the brain doing the work. So when people ask 'is my Dot getting smarter?', the question is really 'what can Astra do?'

Astra launched on September 3, 2026 after OpenAI slowed its release to add safety measures. It became ChatGPT's default engine on September 25. And at DevDay on September 29, OpenAI made dots broadly visible and doubled down on Astra as the engine behind them.

If you read our earlier 'Meet Dots' explainer, nothing about what a Dot is has changed. What's clearer now is what's under the hood, and what that does and doesn't mean for your day.

What Astra gives your Dot

Long jobs that don't fall apart. Astra was built for multi-step work that takes a long time. OpenAI says it finishes a standard computer-use benchmark in roughly 40 minutes per task where the previous model needed about 75, and scores higher while doing it. For a Dot, that's the difference between 'went off and did the thing' and 'got halfway, then asked you what to do'.

Using real websites and apps. Astra leads OpenAI's lineup on computer use and browsing. That's what lets a Dot fill in a form, navigate a supplier portal or pull numbers out of a spreadsheet the way you would, rather than handing you a draft to paste somewhere yourself.

Staying in its lane. OpenAI says Astra is better than its predecessor at respecting task boundaries and understanding what you actually meant. For an agent that runs while you're not watching, that matters more than raw intelligence. You want it to do what you asked, not what it guessed you might also like.

Better writing out of the box. Astra brought a simpler, less jargon-heavy communication style that OpenAI then carried to its cheaper models. Updates from your Dot should read more like a colleague and less like a report.

None of this is a new Dots feature. It's why the Dots features work at all.

What it costs and who can use it

Dots are rolling out inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets. The first Dot is included in those plans at no extra cost. Conversations with a Dot don't count toward your ChatGPT usage limits, but the work it kicks off in Codex or ChatGPT Work does.

At DevDay OpenAI also added a new $500-a-month Pro tier with a much bigger allowance and a faster version of Astra. That tells you who Dots are built for first: heavy users who already pay OpenAI a lot.

If you're on Plus or the free plan, Dots aren't in your account yet. Our 'OpenAI Dots price' and 'Is OpenAI Dots available in the UK and EU?' guides cover the current access picture in more detail, including which countries are still waiting.

Business customers can also run specialist Dots with their own identity and credentials, managed through Microsoft's admin tools. That's a pilot for now and aimed at larger companies.

Where Dots live (and where they don't)

Dots live in ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. They connect to thousands of apps through plugins and can take voice calls. If your company already runs on Slack or Teams, a Dot can sit in the channels you use and pick up work there.

They don't live in WhatsApp. There's no way to message a Dot from a WhatsApp chat, add one to a WhatsApp group, or have it post a reminder into the family or team group. Astra is a remarkable model, and it doesn't change that.

For a lot of people that's not a detail. In Israel, most of Europe, Latin America and India, WhatsApp is where the customer asks about an order, where the team confirms tomorrow's shift, and where the landlord sends the rent reminder. An agent that lives somewhere else is one more place to check.

This is the gap our earlier 'Can OpenAI Dots work on WhatsApp?' piece covered. With Astra confirmed underneath, the answer is still the same: not yet, and nothing OpenAI announced at DevDay points that way.

Do you need Astra-level power for your admin?

Here's the honest test. Look at the last twenty things you wished someone else would handle.

Some of them are genuinely big: 'reconcile these three spreadsheets and chase the suppliers who don't match', 'compare every insurance quote and fill in the application for the cheapest'. Those are Dot jobs. Astra on a cloud computer is the right tool, and if you're already on ChatGPT Pro, try it.

Most of them probably aren't. 'Remind me to call the accountant every Monday at 9.' 'Tell the team group timesheets are due Friday.' 'What did the plumber say about Thursday?' 'What's the notice period in this contract?' These don't need a frontier model on a cloud computer. They need something that's already in the chat, that fires on time, and that remembers what you told it last week.

That's the part the benchmark race skips. The smartest model in the world doesn't help if it's in an app you don't open.

The WhatsApp-native option

Agent Sonic is a personal AI assistant that lives entirely inside WhatsApp. No app to install, no dashboard, no separate place to check. You message it like any other contact.

Reminders that fire where you are. "Remind me to send the invoice to Dana on the 1st of every month" sets a recurring reminder in your WhatsApp chat. "Every Friday at 3, remind the team group about timesheets" posts into the group on its own.

A memory you can ask. Tell Sonic "the landlord agreed to fix the boiler by the 15th" and a week later ask "what did the landlord say about the boiler?" It keeps a persistent memory of what you tell it.

Documents without leaving the chat. Forward a PDF contract, a spreadsheet or an invoice and ask "what's the cancellation fee?" or "total these by supplier." Sonic reads it and answers right there. Send a voice note while you're driving; ask for a voice note back if you'd rather listen.

Follow-ups on your behalf. "Message the three movers I saved, ask who can do the 12th, and tell me who says yes." Sonic contacts them, collects the answers and reports back. It also searches the web for live answers, creates and edits images, and connects to Google Calendar, Sheets and Docs, so "add a call with the bank Tuesday at 11" lands in your calendar.

What it isn't: a computer-use agent. Sonic won't log into a supplier portal and click through screens. If that's the job, a Dot on Astra is the better tool, and we'd tell you so. If the job is the steady stream of admin that happens in WhatsApp, Sonic does it where the conversation already is.

Dot on Astra vs Agent Sonic

Bottom line

OpenAI Dots run on GPT-6 Astra, and Astra is the reason they can work for hours on their own, use real websites, and stay inside the task you gave them. If you're on ChatGPT Pro and have big, multi-step jobs to hand off, that's a real reason to try one.

Astra doesn't change where Dots live. If your admin happens in WhatsApp, the question isn't which model is smartest; it's which assistant is actually in the chat. That's Agent Sonic.

Frequently asked questions

What model does OpenAI Dots use?

GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI's launch materials describe dots as always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's flagship model released September 3, 2026.

Can I choose a cheaper model for my Dot?

OpenAI's cheaper GPT-6 models (Sol, 6.1 Sol and Luna) are aimed at ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. OpenAI hasn't announced a way to switch a dot to a cheaper model; dots are positioned as Astra-powered.

Who can use OpenAI Dots right now?

Dots are rolling out in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. The first dot is included in those plans at no extra cost, and conversations with a dot don't count toward ChatGPT usage limits.

Does OpenAI Dots work on WhatsApp?

No. Dots live in ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. You can't add a dot to a WhatsApp chat or group. For reminders, follow-ups and document reading inside WhatsApp, Agent Sonic works there directly.

Is GPT-6 Astra better than the model other AI assistants use?

For hard, long, multi-step work, yes: Astra is OpenAI's most capable model and scores highest on public intelligence indexes. For short everyday admin, the model matters much less than where the agent lives and whether it fires at the right time.
