Claude Cowork vs OpenAI Dots: Which AI Coworker Fits You? (2026)

Quick answer: Claude Cowork is Anthropic's computer agent for non-technical users: you give it a folder and it reads, creates and edits files in a sandboxed virtual machine. It's been generally available since April 9, 2026 for all paid Claude subscribers on macOS and Windows, with web and mobile for Max subscribers since July. OpenAI dots, launched September 29, 2026, is an always-on agent in ChatGPT with its own cloud computer, 4,000+ app connections and Slack and Teams access, starting at $100/month on ChatGPT Pro (not on Pro in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK). Pick Cowork for file-heavy work you hand off; pick dots for an agent that watches your apps 24/7. Neither lives in WhatsApp, where Agent Sonic does.

Claude Cowork vs OpenAI dots: what's the short answer?

Cowork is the better fit if your work lives in files and you already pay for Claude; dots is the better fit if you want an agent that runs 24/7 across your apps and you're ready to pay $100 a month. Both are serious AI coworkers. They just work in different places.

Anthropic's Claude Cowork started as a research preview on January 12, 2026, built as a computer agent for non-technical people. It became generally available on April 9, 2026 for all paid Claude subscribers on macOS and Windows. You point it at a folder, and it reads, creates and edits files inside a sandboxed virtual machine. Since July 2026, Max subscribers can also use it on the web and mobile, where tasks keep running even when your devices are offline.

OpenAI's dots launched at DevDay on September 29, 2026. A dot is an always-on personal agent built into ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6 Astra, with its own cloud computer and browser. It connects to 4,000+ apps, learns your preferences over time, and you can reach it in ChatGPT, Slack or Microsoft Teams.

The table below lines them up using only what Anthropic and OpenAI have confirmed as of September 29, 2026.

How do Cowork and dots actually work?

Cowork works on the files you hand it; a dot works on your behalf across your apps, even when you're not asking. That's the core difference, and everything else follows from it.

With Cowork, you give Claude a folder. It reads what's there, creates new files and edits existing ones, all inside a sandboxed virtual machine. The desktop app can also use local files and the browser. Think: "Turn these 40 receipts into an expense sheet", "Clean up this folder of client briefs and write a summary of each", or "Draft the quarterly report from these spreadsheets."

With dots, you name and personalize an agent that gets its own cloud computer and browser. It connects to 4,000+ apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem, can sign into supported websites with saved passwords the model never sees, and with your permission can use your own laptop. It remembers context no matter which channel you message it from.

Dots also do something Cowork doesn't pitch: proactive research. A dot scans your connected apps in the background with read-only access and flags things before you ask. OpenAI's favorite example is a freelance writer whose dot noticed he'd forgotten to invoice a publication, pulled the details from the email thread, drafted the invoice and sent it after he approved.

So Cowork is a very capable colleague you hand a pile of work to. A dot is closer to an assistant who sits in your inbox and apps all day.

What do people actually use Claude Cowork for, and where do dots shine?

Cowork's biggest use is business-process work, at a third of sessions; dots are aimed at always-on work across apps, like spotting a missed invoice or chasing a bug posted in Slack. Anthropic has shared real usage data for Cowork; OpenAI, a day after launch, has examples rather than stats.

Across 1.2 million Cowork sessions, Anthropic found the top uses were business-process work (33.4%), content (16.4%) and software (8.7%), with the rest spread across other tasks. That's a telling mix: most people aren't using Cowork to code. They're using it for the operational grind of spreadsheets, reports, documents and file wrangling.

OpenAI's dots examples point the other way: ongoing work that crosses apps. Inside OpenAI, a bug posted in Slack sets dots investigating, and dots have turned a design into a working app. On the personal side, the forgotten-invoice story shows a dot catching something you didn't know to ask about.

If your week is "I have a pile of files and need them turned into something", Cowork's session mix says you're in good company. If it's "things slip between my inbox, Slack and calendar", that's dots' territory.

How do setup, access and price compare?

Cowork comes with any paid Claude plan on macOS or Windows; a dot needs ChatGPT Pro from $100 a month or a Business Premium seat, and you have to create it on a desktop. For most individuals, that makes Cowork the cheaper place to start.

Cowork setup: open the Claude desktop app on macOS or Windows and give Cowork a folder to work in. If you're on Max, you can also use it on the web and mobile, where tasks keep running without your devices online. It's included with paid Claude plans; there's no separate Cowork fee announced.

Dots setup: you create your dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or on the web from a desktop computer. You can't create one on mobile, though you can use it on your phone afterwards. Dots are for users 18+ on ChatGPT Pro (Pro $100, Pro $200 or Pro 500 at $500/month) and Business Premium ($100 per seat per month billed annually, or $125 monthly). Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare get a beta an admin has to switch on. Dots aren't on Free, Go or Plus.

Your first dot is included at no extra charge. Chatting with it doesn't count toward your ChatGPT limits, but tasks it runs in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. OpenAI says more dots, extra speed and more workload will cost extra later, with prices not yet announced. Our OpenAI dots price breakdown covers every tier.

Regions matter too. At launch, Pro dots exclude the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, with no timeline. Business Premium gets dots in all supported ChatGPT regions. Cowork has no dots-style carve-out tied to a plan: if you can buy a paid Claude plan, Cowork comes with it.

Where do you talk to them: Claude Tag in Slack vs dots in Slack and Teams?

Both reach Slack: Anthropic with Claude Tag, an always-on Claude in Slack, and OpenAI with dots in Slack and Microsoft Teams. Neither is in WhatsApp.

For Cowork, the main home is the Claude desktop app on macOS and Windows, plus web and mobile if you're on Max. Separately, Anthropic launched Claude Tag, an always-on Claude that lives in Slack, for teams that want Claude inside their channels.

For dots, you choose: ChatGPT on desktop, web or mobile (including voice), Slack or Microsoft Teams. There's also a limited, US-only texting (SMS) beta for Pro users, where carrier charges may apply. OpenAI says dots will soon come to other messaging apps and even the phone, but gave no dates, and WhatsApp isn't a launch channel.

If your company runs on Teams, that tips things toward dots. If you're a Slack shop, both vendors now have an always-on option there, so it comes down to which model and workflow your team prefers.

Which is safer: Cowork's sandbox or dots' custom rules?

They take different approaches: Cowork limits what it can touch, while dots give you rules over what it may do. Both are reasonable; they fit different kinds of work.

Cowork works on a folder you give it, inside a sandboxed virtual machine. Put simply, you decide the workspace, and the agent does its job there. For file work, that boundary is easy to understand: if a file isn't in the folder, it isn't part of the job.

Dots have a broader reach, so they come with more dials. Custom Rules let you allow an action, require approval, or block it entirely. An auto-review system checks consequential actions. Proactive research is read-only, so the dot can't send messages or change things while it scans. Sensitive tasks such as changing passwords always stay with you. The Activity View shows what the dot is doing, what's scheduled and what's done, and you can pause or reset it any time.

OpenAI is candid that dots can make mistakes, and a monitoring system can pause or stop a dot over safety concerns. Whichever you pick, start with low-stakes tasks and check the results for the first few weeks.

Pros

Cowork vs dots: strengths and trade-offs

Claude Cowork vs dots: which should you choose?

Choose by where your work lives: files point to Cowork, apps and always-on monitoring point to dots. Here's the verdict by type of user.

Freelancers and consultants who live in documents: Cowork. If you already pay for Claude, it's included, and turning a folder of notes into a proposal is exactly its kind of job.

Teams on Slack or Microsoft Teams who want an agent watching their tools: dots. Always-on work, 4,000+ apps and Teams support are its edge, and Business Premium also works in Europe and the UK.

Individuals in the EU, Switzerland or the UK: Cowork, for now. Pro dots aren't available there at launch, and OpenAI hasn't given a timeline.

People comparing Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT in general: in ChatGPT, dots is the always-on option. For a single task you hand off and walk away from, ChatGPT Work is closer to Cowork; our dots vs ChatGPT agent comparison breaks that down.

Small business owners whose admin happens in WhatsApp chats: probably neither, as the next section explains.

Verdict by user type

What if your work happens in WhatsApp, not in folders or Slack?

Then neither Cowork nor dots is where you are: Cowork lives in the Claude app, dots in ChatGPT, Slack and Teams, and neither has a WhatsApp channel. For a lot of small business owners, the real admin is in WhatsApp: clients asking for times, suppliers sending invoices, a team group that forgets the Friday timesheet.

That's the gap Agent Sonic fills. It's a personal AI assistant that lives entirely inside WhatsApp. No app to install, no dashboard, no desktop setup, no folder to hand over: you just message it, by text or voice note.

What that looks like in practice. "Remind me to send the Keller quote every Monday at 9": done, recurring. In your staff group: "Every Friday at 3, remind everyone to submit timesheets": Sonic posts it automatically. "Ask Priya if the delivery is still on for Thursday and tell me what she says": Sonic messages Priya on your behalf and reports her answer back to you.

Documents work too. Forward a contract PDF and ask "Any auto-renewal clause?" or send a spreadsheet and ask "Which clients haven't paid this month?" Sonic reads it and answers in the chat. It also keeps to-dos and notes, remembers what you tell it, searches the live web, generates and edits images, and connects to Google Calendar, Sheets and Docs. It writes in your language, whether that's English, Hebrew or Arabic.

Honest limits: Sonic doesn't make purchases, doesn't have 4,000 integrations, doesn't run a cloud computer for hours of autonomous research or coding, and isn't in Slack or Teams. For a big folder of files, Cowork is the better tool; for an agent watching your apps 24/7, dots is.

But if your to-do list lives in your chats, the lightest AI coworker is the one already in WhatsApp. Get access to Sonic at tryagentsonic.com/contact.
