Split expenses in a WhatsApp group

To split expenses in a WhatsApp group, add Agent Sonic and tell it what was paid: “@Sonic I paid $240 for the court, split between the 4 of us”. It keeps a running tab and, when you ask, tells everyone exactly who should pay whom to settle up — no separate app.

Plan: Basic & Pro · Setup time: 1 minute

Step by step

  1. Add Sonic to the group.
  2. Log each expense in plain words: “@Sonic Dana paid 300 for groceries, split between everyone.”
  3. Split unevenly when needed: “@Sonic I paid 120 for Avi and me.”
  4. Ask for the balance: “@Sonic who owes whom?” — Sonic lists the fewest payments to settle up.
  5. Once people have paid, tell Sonic to mark it settled.

What Sonic can do

  • Track expenses and balances for the whole group.
  • Split equally or between specific people.
  • Work out the fewest payments needed to settle up.
  • Handle different currencies.

What it can't do (yet)

  • Move money — it tracks who owes whom; people still pay each other.
  • Track expenses across different groups together — each group has its own tab.

Try asking

  • “@Sonic I paid $240 for the court, split between the 4 of us.”
  • “@Sonic Tal paid 180 for pizza for Tal, Moshe and me.”
  • “@Sonic who owes whom?”
  • “@Sonic we settled up, clear the tab.”

Questions

Can you split bills in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't split bills itself, but with Agent Sonic in the group you log expenses in plain words and it tracks who owes whom.

Does Sonic handle payments?

No. It keeps the tab and tells you how to settle up; the actual payments happen outside Sonic.

Do all members need Sonic?

No. One subscribed member unlocks the group, and everyone can log expenses by mentioning Sonic.
