Call your own APIs from WhatsApp

Point Sonic at an API — a URL, a curl command, or a description plus a key — and it makes the request and explains the response. Handy for checking an endpoint, pulling a number from your own service, or triggering a webhook.

Plan: Pro · Setup time: 1 minute

Step by step

  1. Open your private chat with Sonic — API requests work in private chats, not in groups.
  2. Send the URL, paste a full curl command, or describe the API and what you need from it.
  3. If the API needs a key, include it (for example “Authorization: Bearer <key>”) — ideally a read-only or limited key.
  4. For anything that changes data (POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE), Sonic restates the request and waits for your OK.
  5. Sonic sends it and replies with the result: the status and a plain-language summary of the response.

What Sonic can do

  • Any method — GET, POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE — with custom headers and a JSON or text body.
  • Run a curl command you paste, with the URL and headers exactly as written.
  • Summarize a JSON response, pull out the field you asked for, or compare results.
  • Read large responses a piece at a time.

What it can't do (yet)

  • Run in WhatsApp groups — otherwise any member could make Sonic call any endpoint.
  • Remember your API keys between requests — include the key when you need it.
  • Wait on very slow endpoints — a request stops after 60 seconds.
  • Download huge files — responses are capped at about 5 MB.
  • Run shell commands — it only makes web (HTTP) requests.

Questions

Is this the same as running curl?

Close. Sonic makes the HTTP request for you and reads the response, so you get the answer instead of raw output. It isn't a terminal — it only makes web requests.

Is it safe to send an API key?

Sonic uses a key only for the request you asked for and never shares it. Your messages stay in your chat history, though, so use a limited, revocable key rather than an admin credential.

Will Sonic call APIs on its own?

No. It only calls the endpoints you point it at, and it asks before any request that changes data.
